Scaling and Root Planing in Annapolis

Healthy gums are the foundation for your oral health, furnishing essential support for your teeth. When plaque and tartar bypass your daily defenses and move below the gum line, it’s time for a strong, tactical approach to oral health: Scaling and Root Planing.

What Is Scaling and Root Planing?

Often called a “deep cleaning,” scaling and root planing is a non-surgical treatment for periodontal (gum) disease. While standard cleanings focus on the area above the gum line, this procedure targets bacteria and buildup below the gum line to address infection and bone loss.

Although scaling and root planing cannot cure periodontal disease, it can slow its progression. Scaling and root planing remove the plaque that causes swollen gums and bone damage, reducing the need for future surgery. With successful treatment, gums regain normal color, swelling subsides, and pockets shrink as gums reattach to the smoothed roots.

Signs You Need Deep Cleaning for Gum Disease

Gum disease is a stealthy opponent, often progressing without pain until it reaches an advanced stage. You may be a candidate for scaling and root planing if you notice:

  • Persistent bad breath that doesn’t go away with brushing.
  • Gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss.
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums.
  • Receding gum lines making your teeth look longer.
  • Deep pockets forming between your teeth and gums.

Our Procedure

Our team approaches your care with the same “mission-first” mentality and focus found throughout our practice. We start the process by numbing the area with a local anesthetic for your comfort. Using specialized instruments or ultrasonic tools, we gently remove plaque and tartar (calculus) from the tooth surface and from the pockets beneath the gum line.

Once we have removed all the plaque and tartar, we smooth out the roots of your teeth. Smoothing these rough spots makes it harder for bacteria to re-attach, allowing your gum tissue to heal and re-attach firmly to the bone. If necessary, we may apply a disinfectant or antibiotics to the tooth roots to discourage bacterial regrowth.

Benefits of Scaling and Root Planing

  • Halts Infection: Stops the progression of gum disease before it leads to tooth loss.
  • Protects Your Overall Health: Reducing oral inflammation is associated with better heart health and systemic well-being.
  • Freshens Breath: Removes the deep-seated bacteria that cause chronic odors.
  • Preserves Your Natural Smile: Our philosophy is minimally invasive dentistry. We aim to save your natural teeth whenever possible.

Aftercare / Recovery

Following the procedure, you may experience some minor sensitivity or tenderness for a few days. To help your gums heal:

  • Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and brush gently to avoid irritation.
  • Practice good oral hygiene by flossing carefully around your treated areas.
  • Do not smoke or use tobacco products, as these can interfere with healing.
  • Rinse with warm salt water several times a day to soothe your gum tissues and reduce inflammation. Mix one teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water for the best results.
  • Avoid eating extremely hot or cold foods for the next 48 hours to prevent discomfort. Choose soft, lukewarm foods until any tenderness subsides.
  • Attend all recommended follow-up maintenance appointments so your dental team can monitor your recovery and help prevent the infection from returning.

Are scaling and root planing painful?

We typically use a local anesthetic to numb the area being treated. While you may feel some pressure, the procedure itself should not be painful. For patients with high anxiety, we offer a compassionate, supportive environment to put you at ease. Your teeth may feel sensitive for a few days after the procedure, but this will pass quickly.

How often do I need it?

Unlike routine cleanings, scaling and root planing act as a “reset” for your oral health. After deep cleaning, most patients transition to Periodontal Maintenance cleanings every three to four months.
